Howayenheoh: Men's Mentoring
Howayenheoh is a Cayuga word meaning "He is a learned person."
Bridging the loss of men's traditional roles with open, honest conversation about being both male and Native captures the intent of Howayenheoh. Working with Native men, particularly those in leadership is a major emphasis. The focus is to develop Native capacity; train Native men in needed skills through small groups; introduce Native men to one-on-one mentoring relationships.
Details: We encourage and facilitate vulnerability that Native men need for dealing with their unique issues and personal struggles. Howayenheoh also enables them to deal more effectively with specific cultural and leadership issues related to Native peoples and their communities. MPI staffer Adrian Jacobs, First Nations leader, counselor, men's mentor, author, has written extensively on Mentoring Native Men, which is the basis of this workshop. |
